Logistics yard layout example: laydown, storage and truck movements
A logistics yard works when trucks flow one way, materials have a clear home and people stay away from moving vehicles. This example shows how to set one out in EasySiteSI.
What the layout needs to solve
A yard is a small traffic system. Trucks arrive, unload or load, and leave. Materials are stored, picked and moved. People walk between offices, storage and vehicles. The layout should make the safe path the easy path, with enough room for the largest vehicle to turn.
Step by step
- Calibrate the yard. Put your site plan on the satellite map at true scale and draw the site boundary.
- Gates first. Mark the entry and exit gates. Separate gates make a one-way loop much easier.
- Truck route. Draw a one-way delivery route through the yard and check it with true-size trucks and semi-trailers from the SITE OBJECTS library.
- Loading bays. Place loading bays along the route so trucks never need to reverse across a walkway.
- Laydown and storage. Set out laydown areas and containers next to the loading bays, grouped by what is stored there.
- Water and services. Add water tanks, refuelling or wash-down areas where vehicles can reach them without blocking the route.
- People. Draw pedestrian walkways and crossings, and place site offices and parking away from the truck loop.
- Export. Print a PDF with a legend and north arrow for inductions and the gatehouse.
Tips
- Drag a semi-trailer along the route to spot tight corners early.
- Use exclusion zones to mark no-go areas around machinery.
- Update the plan in phases as stockpiles grow and shrink.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I lay out a logistics yard?
Start with the gates, then a one-way truck route, then loading bays along it, then laydown and storage next to the bays. Add pedestrian walkways and offices last, kept away from the truck loop.
Can I check truck turning space?
EasySiteSI has true-size trucks and semi-trailers you can place and move along a route to see how they fit. It does not run swept-path analysis, so use a dedicated tool or engineer where that is needed.
Can I separate pedestrians and vehicles on the plan?
Yes. Draw walkways, crossings and exclusion zones so the plan shows where people can and can't go.
Can I share the yard plan?
Yes. Export a print-ready PDF, or share your EasySiteSI files with your team so they can open and update the plan.
